The answer to this question depends on the circumstances of the relationship and the people involved. While taking a break can help couples work through issues and reflect on the relationship, it can also cause additional confusion and stress.

But always remember that wanting to take a break from a relationship is not being selfish. Couples need to have their personal space every once in a while. Respect is the key. If one wants some time alone, give it. Don’t be the controlling kind because you will only suffocate your partner that way.

That’s why you need to approach the idea with careful consideration from both sides. Communicate clearly the reason for wanting a break, what you hope to gain from it, and what your expectations of the break will be.

If you decide to go through with a break, you should set clear guidelines on how long it will last and how you will approach communication during the break. You should also set proper expectations after the break — whether that means coming back together or ending the relationship.

Also, it is important NOT to make rash decisions based on your emotions. If you recently had a fight, do not decide on anything, especially when it comes to taking a break. Decisions based on emotions are more likely to result in regret, with the relationship unfortunately ending abruptly. Take time to cool down before making impulsive decisions.
