There are a lot of risks when you decide to meet someone you met on an online dating platform. But if you take the necessary precautions, the risks are effectively lessened.

You have to understand that one feature of online dating is anonymity. While you are required to input your information and submit a picture, people can always provide false information to deceive other users. You might think you are talking to a woman when in reality you’re talking to a man or vice versa, and meeting them can be risky.

Scams and fraud are also some of the most common risks.

So if you want to lessen, if not eliminate the risks of meeting someone you met online, you can take these precautions:

  • Before agreeing to meet in person, call them. A video call is recommended so you can see who you are talking to and you can be sure they’re a real person. If they refuse and give you reasons, then you should think twice about meeting them.
  • Choose a meeting place that is illuminated and full of people. If the person you are going to meet has bad intentions, having people around will deter their plans. And never agree to meet at night when they can take advantage of the cover of darkness.
  • Ask if they’re okay if you bring someone along. Let a friend or family member (preferably male) accompany you so they can watch out for you. This shouldn’t be a problem unless that other person has something to hide.
  • Join only reliable and reputable online dating apps and websites. While most provide only the bare minimum when it comes to safety features, there are those that take users’ safety seriously.
