Having a child in the dating scene can be a deal-breaker. But I’m sure many women would be willing to date a single dad.

Dating as a single dad can be challenging; let’s get that out of the way first. You might wonder how dating while raising children even works.

Should you mention that you have kids? What about the mom? Should you talk about your ex? Does it turn women off? Should you date single moms only?

You may have many questions, but you shouldn’t let that discourage you from finding a romantic interest.

But remember that you have a significant commitment as a parent. As such, you should find a partner who can reciprocate your values of stability and family and understand that your child is an extension of yourself; they are a non-negotiable priority.

Don’t waste your time with a woman who can’t see that.

On another note, although dating can be doable as a single dad, it boils down to where you are, mentally and emotionally. Start asking yourself if you’re even ready for a relationship.

Pay attention to how you feel

Dating as a single dad can be intimidating, given that you’ve already skipped to mid-game. But you shouldn’t dive back in just because you feel like it.

You have to find your center of gravity before venturing out again. Harboring mixed emotions, particularly toward your ex-wife, or having doubts about starting another relationship while raising kids can lead to a bad dating experience.

Date when you are emotionally and mentally ready. This way, you no longer have any baggage to bring into the relationship (aside from your children, kidding~).

Don’t forget to tell your kids

After considering how you feel, break it down for your kids. Tell them about how you feel and how your lives could ultimately change for the better.

They may or may not agree with you, but no matter their opinions, be fair to them. Reassure them that they are still the most significant people in your life and that having someone new can’t change that.

Simply put, just be honest, regardless of what they may think.

Be honest with your date

Right off the bat, tell potential partners that you have children. Don’t waste your time and hold off telling them on the 3rd or 5th date. Chances are, she might not be comfortable with guys who have kids. And you’ve just wasted each other’s time.

A single dad can be a turn-off for some women. And good riddance!

You need a partner who’s comfortable with your family and won’t waste your time. God knows you only have a limited time frame for dating as a parent.

Who are you allowed to date?

You are allowed to date just about anyone you like. When dating as a single dad, don’t just limit yourself to single moms.

Though the interaction between you and another single parent can be more empathetic, you shouldn’t take women without children for granted; some of them are cool with that.
