RELATIONSHIPS
“What did you learn about communication from your previous relationships?”
As a person who has experienced the ups and downs of relationships, I have learned that communication is one of the most important things in a relationship.
Here’s what I’ve learned about communication so far:
It involves two people. Communication is a 2-way process. You either talk or listen. One shouldn’t have priority over the other. Allow each other equal opportunities to talk and listen.
Communicate when the opportunity presents itself. Don’t wait for the other to tell you when you should communicate. Keep your relationship alive through constant communication. Whether you talk about how your day went or your plans for the weekend, make your partner feel like they are always part of your day.
Communication can solve problems. Silence is a relationship’s worst enemy. Don’t keep problems to yourself because they won’t fix themselves if you don’t talk about them. If you have a problem with your partner — talk. Your partner won’t know what they are doing wrong if you don’t talk about it, and they will continue doing so unless you resolve it together.
Know your limits. While communication is important, you should also understand that your partner isn’t always in the mood to talk. Don’t force them to communicate if they don’t feel like having one. Respect each other’s needs, including space.
